Picture book review : Just Imagine- Nick Sharratt & Pippa Goodheart

Just Imagine, created by Nick Sharratt and Pippa Goodhart, is the sequel to You Choose, which sold over a million copies worldwide and was chosen as the winner of the Mumsnet Best Awards 2011. As the title suggests, the book invites you and your child to "just imagine" all sorts of things : What would it be like to be a giant so big you'd have to have a bath in a swimming pool or so small you could ride a mouse like a horse? Maybe you could enter a world of magical beings, travel through time or explore underground ?

Each double page takes you on a new journey of adventure and discovery and the illustrations are absolutely teeming with details guaranteed to capture any child's (or parent's!) imagination. Some details have nothing to do with the central theme of the page and lead to extra interesting and informative discussions and explanations, for example the little girl with an eye patch on one of the pages or the flying pig in another picture. Both 3-year-old Pierre and 7-year-old Juliette have been totally absorbed by the book, frequently flicking through the pages in a quiet moment, and as it is a largely visual book, Pierre can even "read" it all by himself when he feels like it (although he obviously gets a lot more out of it when we share a special moment looking at the pictures and pointing things out together).

Nick Sharratt's drawings are instantly recognisable, especially to fans of Jacqueline Wilson, and Juliette is convinced she has spotted Tracy Beaker in one of the pictures. There is so much going on in the illustrations that it's quite possible !
