Plum Organic Mighty 4 review

Plum, the organic baby food brand, has launched a new range of innovative super-nutritious snack pouches for toddlers called the ‘Mighty 4’ range. The first product of its kind to land in the UK, the Mighty 4 range contains four key food groups in one handy pouch: fruit, vegetables, dairy and ancient grains.

We received some samples to review - the Madhouse Mini-testers may not be toddlers any more but they still love fruity pouches as snacks on the go ! - and I have to admit, I did a double take when I saw the combinations of ingredients :
- Blackberry, quinoa, purple carrot and Greek-style yogurt
- Sweet potato, blueberry, millet and Greek-style yogurt
- Kale, strawberry, amaranth and Greek-style yogurt

As a grown-up, this just sounded wrong so, as two out of three Mini-Testers can read, I asked them to play the game and blind test them. As we were out doing carnival, they were in a good mood and quite happy to play along !

Sophie got Kale, Strawberry, Amaranth and Greek-style Yogurt. She said it was really nice and tasted of strawberry yogurt. After drinking half of the pouch, she looked at the ingredients and said "kale ?! as in, like spinach ?!" then, a couple of slurps later, said "ummm it's got a funny background taste now that I know and I don't really like it any more". That says it all - serve it in a bowl if your kids can read so that they're not put off !

Pierre got Blackberry, Quinoa, Purple Carrot and Greek-style yogurt and he liked his, drinking the whole pouch and saying it tasted of raspberry yogurt. Interestingly, he can't read and he didn't look at the pictures on the pack.

Juliette got Sweet potato, Blueberry, Millet and Greek-style yogurt  and she was less convinced, but she also "cheated" and looked at the pictures on the pouch before tasting it.

All three pouches are suitable for children aged 12 months +. If you're in the process of introducing babies to new tastes or if you're desperate to get some vegetables and cereals into fussy eater toddlers, I think they'd work really well. For older kids, they seem to get a great reception if you hide the packaging and then don't let on what the "hidden" ingredients are. Maybe Plum should rethink the packagaing to make this less obvious?

star rating : 4/5

RRP : £1.19 per 100g pouch.

The products will be rolled out in Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Asda, Boots, Waitrose, Ocado and Morrisons between January and April 2014.
